Man Apprehended for AI-Generated Fake Obscene Video and Blackmail in Silchar
A 28-year-old man has been arrested by police for allegedly creating and circulating a fake obscene video of a woman using artificial intelligence (AI) tools and subsequently blackmailing her, authorities confirmed on Friday. The incident highlights growing concerns over the misuse of technology for cybercrimes.
Arrest and Operation Details
The accused, identified as Ripon Nath, a resident of Ratabari in Sribhumi district, was apprehended from Hyderabad by a team from Gumrah police station in a coordinated operation. He was brought to Silchar on transit remand and is currently in police custody. Nath was employed with a private firm in Hyderabad at the time of the alleged crimes.
Alleged Crime Sequence
According to police reports, Nath contacted a woman from the Gumrah area in Cachar district over the phone and proposed an illicit relationship. When she rejected his advances, he allegedly used AI-based applications to fabricate an explicit video featuring her likeness and circulated it on social media platforms. The accused then used this morphed video to blackmail the woman for several days, leading to severe harassment.
Unable to bear the ongoing harassment, the victim lodged a formal complaint at Gumrah police station, prompting the investigation and subsequent arrest.
Police Response and Forensic Examination
Police officials reiterated that strict action will be taken against individuals involved in cybercrimes, particularly those misusing AI technology for defamation, harassment, or extortion. Electronic devices seized from the accused have been sent for forensic examination to gather further evidence and analyze the extent of the misuse.
This case underscores the urgent need for awareness and legal measures to combat digital harassment and the ethical challenges posed by advancing AI tools.
