Sega Reveals Yakuza Prequel: Snoop Dogg, Late Actor Included

Sega has revealed more details on its upcoming Yakuza prequel, Stranger Than Heaven. The Japanese game maker has confirmed a varied cast, including Snoop Dogg and multiple other celebrities. RGG Studio is working on a game that will expand the Yakuza universe, blending fictional and real-world influences and featuring appearances inspired by actors from across different eras.

Among the notable inclusions is the late Bunta Sugawara, known for roles in the Battles Without Honor and Humanity film series. According to a press release shared with Polygon, Sugawara’s likeness has been recreated in the game with the family’s permission and support from Toei Company, using archival material.

What Sega Said About Yakuza Stranger Than Heaven

"In Stranger Than Heaven, the late and legendary actor Bunta Sugawara appears," said representatives of Sega and RGG Studio. Sega received formal consent from his family, and, with materials provided by Toei Company, which produced many of Sugawara’s films, including the Battles Without Honor and Humanity, RGG Studio crafted his CG character design based on archival footage and photographs from the time. The character’s voice is performed by actor Takashi Ukaji, who shared a close connection with Sugawara. Ukaji has appeared in projects such as Ultraman and Kamen Rider.

Legacy Actors in Modern Media

The use of legacy actors in new media has drawn attention in recent years. For instance, the late Val Kilmer appeared in footage for the film As Deep As the Grave through generative AI, a move that sparked debate but was supported by his family. His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, said, “I think this is a really historic precedent, and I’m really proud of him.”

Release Date and Platforms

Yakuza: Stranger Than Heaven is scheduled to launch this winter on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and PlayStation 5. More details about the storyline and character roles are expected closer to release as Sega continues to share updates about the project.
