Asiatic Lion's Ailment Remains Mystery as Lab Results Awaited

Nagpur: The mystery surrounding the ailment of a four-year-old Asiatic lion, named Bharat, continues to deepen as crucial laboratory results remain pending. The lion was recently transferred from Mumbai to the Gorewada Wildlife Research and Treatment Centre (WRTC) for advanced veterinary care. Despite being under medical observation, the lion is struggling to stand, and previous treatment in Mumbai failed to yield the desired results.

Inconclusive Tests in Mumbai

A source close to the development revealed that tests conducted in Mumbai were inconclusive and produced conflicting results. Consequently, the decision was made to shift the lion to Gorewada, which boasts a state-of-the-art treatment facility. “Some tests have already been conducted here, but the results of a few critical ones are still awaited. Once those are available, the underlying issue will be identified, and appropriate treatment will commence,” the source, who requested anonymity, stated.

Persistent Hind Limb Paresis

The lion's condition remains a significant concern. According to the source, Bharat is unable to stand properly, with persistent hind limb paresis being the primary clinical problem. This condition persisted despite prolonged treatment in Mumbai. The lion was originally brought to Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Mumbai from Gujarat under an approved animal exchange program. Despite isolation management and intensive supportive care over several months, the lion did not show satisfactory clinical improvement.

Transfer to Gorewada

Forest officials decided to transfer the lion to Gorewada to seek more advanced diagnostic and treatment options. To minimize stress during the journey, the lion was transported during nighttime in an air-conditioned veterinary ambulance specially equipped for animal transport. This marks the first time a lion has been admitted to Gorewada's WRTC, which is regarded as one of the most advanced wildlife research and treatment facilities in the country.

Awaiting Results

The veterinary team at Gorewada is eagerly awaiting the results of the pending tests. Once these results are received, a clearer picture of the lion's health will emerge, and a targeted treatment plan can be initiated. The facility is well-equipped to handle complex wildlife medical cases, and the staff is hopeful for a positive outcome.
