Traffic congestion at Bengaluru's Horamavu Junction has intensified due to extended signal delays and irregular police presence, commuters reported on July 5, 2026. The junction, a critical node connecting several residential areas, has seen worsening gridlock as signal timings malfunction, causing vehicles to wait for prolonged periods, especially during peak hours.
Signal Malfunctions and Enforcement Gaps
Commuters allege that traffic signals at Horamavu Junction frequently experience technical glitches, leading to erratic light changes and delays of up to several minutes. While traffic police are deployed at the junction at times, enforcement is inconsistent, particularly during weekends and non-peak hours, when officers are often absent. This has led to chaotic traffic flow, with vehicles jumping signals and blocking intersections.
According to daily commuter Ravi Shankar, a resident of nearby Hennur, the situation has become unbearable. He stated, "The signals are unreliable, and police presence is sporadic. On weekends, it's a free-for-all, with no one managing the traffic. We often spend 20-30 minutes just to cross the junction."
Impact on Commuters and Local Businesses
The prolonged delays have significantly increased travel times for thousands of daily commuters using the junction to access Outer Ring Road and other arterial roads. Auto-rickshaw driver Mahesh Kumar noted, "During peak hours, I avoid this junction altogether. It takes at least 15 minutes extra, and customers get frustrated." Local businesses have also reported a decline in foot traffic due to the congestion, with shop owner Ananya Patel saying, "Customers avoid coming here because of the traffic. We've lost regulars."
Data from the Bengaluru Traffic Police indicates that the junction handles over 50,000 vehicles daily, making it one of the busiest in the eastern corridor. The signal failures have exacerbated congestion, with average wait times increasing by 40% compared to last year, according to commuter estimates.
Authorities Respond
Bengaluru Traffic Police officials acknowledged the issue and attributed the signal delays to ongoing maintenance and software upgrades. Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M.N. Anucheth said, "We are aware of the technical glitches at Horamavu Junction and are working with the Bengaluru Smart City Limited to resolve them. Additional manpower will be deployed during peak hours, but weekend enforcement remains a challenge due to staff shortages." He urged commuters to report signal issues via the dedicated helpline.
However, commuters remain skeptical about the timeline for fixes. Long-time resident Sunil Rao commented, "Promises are made every year, but nothing changes. We need permanent solutions, not temporary patches." The junction's traffic woes reflect broader infrastructure challenges in Bengaluru, where rapid urbanization has outpaced road and signal upgrades.
