The Chandigarh Administration has approved a Rs 1.26 crore project to install grass pavers on the land opposite the world-famous Rock Garden in Sector 1. The UT Engineering Department has invited tenders for this initiative, aimed at enhancing the aesthetic appeal and environmental sustainability of the city's tourist hub.
Project Details and Timeline
The project will cover the area facing the Rock Garden, a major tourist attraction. Grass pavers provide a durable, eco-friendly surface that can withstand heavy footfall and vehicular movement. Unlike solid concrete, they allow rainwater to percolate into the ground, aiding groundwater recharge and reducing surface runoff, especially during the monsoon season. The department has set a tight deadline: the entire work must be completed within two months after awarding the contract to minimize inconvenience to tourists and residents.
Comprehensive Plantation Plan 2026-27
To increase green cover, the UT Administration has prepared a Plantation Plan 2026-27 in consultation with all stakeholders. This year, the focus is on quality over quantity. All departments have been advised to use quality planting material to ensure better growth and survival of saplings. The plantation target for all greening agencies during 2026-27 is set at 4,19,854 saplings, including distribution and sale of plants.
Plantation Success in 2025-26
During the plantation activities in 2025-26, the Greening Chandigarh Action Plan exceeded its target. Against a target of 5,76,221 saplings, a total of 6,64,133 saplings were planted, surpassing the goal by over 87,000 saplings.
City Forest Development Project
Meanwhile, the UT Administration plans to establish a City Forest Development Project in the Sukhna choe forest area, adhering strictly to environmental safeguards and conservation principles. The proposed City Forest is envisioned as a landmark initiative to promote environmental conservation, nature-based education, and sustainable ecotourism in Chandigarh.
Key Components of the City Forest
The project aims to create awareness among citizens about forest and wildlife protection through immersive learning experiences. It will be developed using eco-friendly and sustainable materials to ensure minimal ecological disturbance. Key components include:
- A nature interpretation centre
- An open-air theatre
