A tragic incident occurred in Garhwa district on Saturday when a 32-year-old fisherman, identified as Suresh Singh, drowned while attempting to retrieve his fishing net from a pond in Jhumelwa village. The police confirmed the incident on Sunday.
Details of the Incident
According to the police, Singh had cast his net into the pond to catch fish when it became stuck in deep water. In an effort to free the net, he dived into the pond. However, during his attempt, he became entangled in the net and drowned before he could resurface.
Rescue Operation
Villagers alerted local authorities after realizing that Singh had not emerged from the water. Police arrived at the scene and initiated an inquiry. Local divers conducted a rescue operation but were unable to retrieve the body initially.
Officer in-charge of Ranka police station, Ravi Keshri, stated, “Further investigation is underway.” Deputy Commissioner Ananya Mittal has been informed, and efforts are being made to bring an NDRF team from Ranchi to assist in the rescue operation, as confirmed by DSP Rohit Ranjan Singh.
Background
The deceased, Suresh Singh, was a resident of Jhumelwa village and relied on fishing for his livelihood. The pond where the incident took place is a common fishing spot for locals. The community is in shock over the sudden loss.
