Heavy Rain Triggers Landslides in Kinnaur; NH-5 Closed at Cholling Near Reckong Peo
Heavy Rain Triggers Landslides in Kinnaur; NH-5 Closed

Heavy rain lashed Himachal Pradesh's Kinnaur district on Thursday night, triggering landslides that blocked National Highway-5 at Cholling, about 25 km from Reckong Peo. Large quantities of muck and debris cascaded onto the road, burying a couple of vehicles under the debris. No casualties were reported, according to officials.

Rain Disrupts Traffic and Sparks Panic

The highway closure has disrupted traffic in the region, with authorities working to clear the debris. In Ribba village, heavy rain triggered panic during the early hours of Friday as water and mud flowed through the area. The southwest monsoon entered Himachal Pradesh only a few days ago, but parts of the state, particularly Kinnaur, have already begun witnessing rain-related damage.

Weather Alerts Issued

The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall at isolated places in Kangra and Mandi districts on Friday. A yellow alert has also been issued for Kullu, Shimla, Sirmaur and Una districts, warning of heavy rain at isolated locations. The alerts indicate the potential for further disruption in the coming days.
