Kanpur: The city woke up to a cloudy sky followed by continuous light showers on Thursday morning, leading to a sharp drop in temperature and providing much-needed relief from the prevailing heat. The maximum temperature dipped to around 30°C, significantly easing discomfort for residents. South-easterly winds blowing at speeds between 6.3 kmph and 18 kmph further enhanced the pleasant conditions.
Rainfall and Humidity Levels
According to the Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology observatory, approximately 3.4 mm of rainfall was recorded in Kanpur. While weather conditions remained largely comfortable throughout the day, the afternoon saw partial clearing of clouds. However, nights remained relatively warm, with the minimum temperature recorded at 27.8°C, which is above normal. Maximum relative humidity hovered around 65%.
Forecast for Friday and Beyond
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast partly cloudy skies with mild sunshine for Friday across the Kanpur division. As moisture levels are expected to decline, temperature may rise slightly, though the heat index is likely to stay under control. In the coming days, temperatures are expected to remain below normal initially before stabilizing around average levels. Weather experts have indicated the possibility of light rain or drizzle on May 4 and 5, along with strong winds, duststorms, and isolated hailstorms.
Expert Insights
Dr S Sunil Pandey, a weather expert at CSA University, stated that daytime temperatures are likely to gradually increase, though they may remain at or slightly below normal levels for the time being. He also noted that humid conditions are expected to persist. The change in weather began late at night, when parts of the city experienced light duststorms followed by mild rain. By morning, overcast skies prevailed across the city, with light drizzle in most of the areas.
