Steady Inflow in Krishna and Ghataprabha Rivers
Heavy rains continued in parts of Maharashtra's Western Ghats region and the catchment areas of the Krishna River, keeping the inflow into Karnataka's Krishna and Ghataprabha rivers steady. According to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), the inflow at the Almatti dam on the Krishna River was recorded at 1.2 lakh cusecs on Thursday, while the Ghataprabha River at the Ghataprabha dam saw an inflow of 35,000 cusecs.
Impact on Reservoirs and Agriculture
The steady inflow has brought relief to farmers in the Krishna basin, who rely on these rivers for irrigation. The Almatti dam, with a storage capacity of 130 tmcft, is currently 65% full, while the Ghataprabha dam is 70% full. KSNDMC officials said that the water levels are expected to rise further if rains continue in the coming days.
Government Monitoring and Advisory
The Karnataka government has issued an advisory to residents in low-lying areas along the Krishna and Ghataprabha rivers to remain vigilant. “We are continuously monitoring the situation and have alerted district administrations in Belagavi, Vijayapura, and Bagalkot to be prepared for any emergency,” said a senior official from the Karnataka Revenue Department. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more rainfall in the Western Ghats over the next 48 hours, which could further increase inflows.
