Schools in Latur and Nanded districts of Maharashtra have shifted to morning classes starting June 23 as temperatures soar and humidity levels rise, raising health concerns for students. The new academic year began on June 15, and schools resumed regular functioning, but the scorching weather prompted the change.
Reason for the shift
The decision was taken after reports of students facing health issues due to extreme heat and high humidity. According to local education officials, the morning schedule aims to protect children from heat-related illnesses such as dehydration and heatstroke.
Details of the new schedule
Classes will now start earlier, typically around 7:00 AM, and conclude by 11:30 AM, avoiding the peak afternoon heat. The revised timings apply to both primary and secondary schools in the affected districts. Parents have been notified through school circulars and local announcements.
Broader impact
Latur and Nanded have recorded temperatures exceeding 40°C in recent days, with humidity levels above 70%. The state education department is monitoring the situation and may extend the morning schedule to other districts if conditions worsen. Similar measures were implemented in parts of Vidarbha last year.
