Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) has commissioned the precision approach lighting (PAL) Category-I system for Runway 24, following approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This system provides enhanced visual guidance to pilots during the final stages of landing, particularly under reduced visibility at the tabletop facility.
Enhanced Safety and Efficiency
With this installation, the airport aims to strengthen safe, reliable, and efficient aircraft operations while ensuring regulatory compliance. The project is among the most unique airfield lighting installations in India.
Engineering Marvel
The approach lighting system features airfield lighting intelligent management systems (ALIMS) mounted on specially engineered towers that extend 900 meters from the runway threshold. Most towers rise higher than the Qutub Minar, underscoring the project's scale and engineering complexity. The facility is only the second of its kind in Asia, placing MIA among a select group of airports worldwide with such infrastructure, according to a release.
The installation involved mounting precision approach lights on elevated lattice structures, a design described as rare globally. There are 17 lattice structures, each fitted with a barrette containing four lights and a sequential-flashing light at the centre. The barrette can be lowered to the ground for maintenance. A zero-accident record was maintained throughout the construction phase.
Operational Benefits
The PAL Category-I system offers multiple safety benefits. It provides a clear visual reference during approach, especially in rain, fog, or haze, and enables precise alignment with the runway centreline. Given the topographical characteristics of Mangaluru's tabletop runway, it improves pilot confidence and approach stability. Better visual cues aid smoother landings, improving operational efficiency and minimising disruptions. The use of ALIMS enables centralised monitoring and efficient management of airfield lighting systems.
The PAL system complements ongoing airside enhancements at the airport, including upgrades to runway lighting and safety infrastructure, reinforcing its long-term vision to become one of the safest tabletop airports in India.
"The commissioning of the PAL system reflects the airport's continuous focus on adopting advanced technologies to enhance aviation safety and passenger confidence," the airport spokesperson said.
