The Forest Department and Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) have joined hands to plant 2.46 lakh seedlings across the city on World Environment Day, aiming to significantly boost the region's green cover. This initiative is part of a larger effort to combat urban heat and improve air quality.
Plantation Drive Details
Alongside the plantation drive, the authorities are distributing 1.44 lakh seedlings to farmers and the general public during the ongoing rainy season. This distribution is intended to encourage individual participation in afforestation and to support local agriculture.
Distribution to Farmers and Public
The seedlings are being provided free of cost at designated centers across Mysuru. Farmers are being given priority to ensure that the plants contribute to both ecological balance and agricultural productivity. The MCC has urged citizens to collect seedlings and plant them in their neighborhoods, schools, and public spaces.
Long-Term Environmental Goals
This initiative aligns with the city's long-term environmental goals, which include increasing the green cover by 10% over the next five years. The Forest Department has selected native species that are well-suited to the local climate and require minimal maintenance. Officials believe that community involvement is key to the success of the drive and have planned follow-up activities to monitor the survival rate of the planted saplings.
World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5, serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to protect the planet. The Mysuru drive is one of many such events taking place across Karnataka, reflecting the state's commitment to environmental sustainability.
