Nagpur Residents Launch 'Save Amrai' Mission Near Airport

Nagpur: Residents of Pratap Nagar and Sonegaon have initiated a citizen-led 'Save Amrai' mission aimed at restoring the forested patch near Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport. The area had suffered from years of littering and neglect, prompting local action.

Cleanup Drive by Volunteers

On Sunday, approximately 20 volunteers, including senior citizens and young individuals, conducted a cleanup drive near the Hanuman Temple, which is situated opposite a historic well dating back to the Bhonsle era. The team collected nearly 10 sacks of waste, which included liquor bottles, plastic wrappers, food packaging material, and other garbage.

The Times of India had previously reported multiple times on the deteriorating condition and unabated littering at this location. The area, known for its old mango grove and a nearly 300-year-old well, had become a dumping ground and a spot for open liquor consumption and parties, according to residents. Locals alleged that repeated complaints to civic authorities had resulted in little action.

Future Plans and Civic Engagement

The group now plans to hold cleanup drives every Sunday morning. They also aim to plant multiple species of mango trees to revive the grove and will work with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation's solid waste management department for proper garbage disposal. Group members stated that the initiative is not only about maintaining cleanliness but also about reviving the lost greenery and heritage value of the area.

The effort has drawn civic attention, with NMC standing committee chairperson Shivani Dani recently inspecting the site. Restoration and cleaning of the historic well are expected to begin after receiving approval from the Heritage Committee.
