Red Alert Issued for Chandigarh After Overnight Rain
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Chandigarh on Friday morning after the city experienced another night of heavy rain. The alert, issued at 7:22 am, warned of a moderate to intense spell of rain over Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula, along with adjoining areas, for the next two to three hours. Residents were advised to remain in safe places, avoid shelter under trees, stay away from weak structures, and suspend outdoor activities until conditions improve.
Heaviest Rain of the Season Recorded on Thursday
Thursday saw the season's heaviest rainfall in Chandigarh, with 34 mm recorded between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm. This was the highest rainfall in Punjab and the third highest in the Punjab-Haryana region, after Yamunanagar (54 mm) and Palwal (38.5 mm). The overnight rain added to waterlogging in several low-lying areas and vulnerable stretches, where storm-water drains and road gullies struggled to clear runoff quickly.
Yellow Alert Continues Till Monday
The IMD has retained a yellow alert for Chandigarh until Monday, forecasting heavy rain at isolated places accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph. No weather warning has been issued from Tuesday onwards, indicating a likely decline in rain activity, though monsoon showers are expected to continue. An IMD spokesperson said, "The southwest monsoon remains active over Chandigarh. High moisture availability and favourable atmospheric conditions are supporting repeated spells of rain. The city is likely to witness intermittent rain through Monday, with isolated heavy spells. Rainfall activity is expected to reduce from Tuesday."
Weather Alert Color Codes Explained
The IMD uses color-coded alerts to communicate weather risks. Yellow means "Be Aware" – weather may affect routine activities, so keep updated and exercise caution. Orange means "Be Prepared" – weather is likely to cause disruption, so be ready to take protective action. Red means "Take Action" – severe weather is expected or occurring; follow official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel or outdoor activity.
The red alert for Chandigarh comes less than 24 hours after Thursday's heavy rain, which caused traffic jams on the Chandigarh-Zirakpur stretch of the National Highway during the morning rush hour. Residents are advised to stay indoors and follow IMD guidelines until the alert is lifted.
