Srinagar Records 35.3°C, Surpassing Last Year's June Peak
Srinagar sizzled at 35.3 degrees Celsius on June 29, 2026, marking one of the hottest June days in decades. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the temperature surpassed last year's June peak of 35.2°C recorded on June 19. This extreme heat has raised concerns among residents and authorities alike.
IMD Data Confirms Record-Breaking Heat
The IMD confirmed that the mercury hit 35.3°C in Srinagar, making it the highest June temperature in recent years. The previous record for June 2025 was 35.2°C. The current reading is among the top five hottest June days recorded in the city over the past 50 years. Officials noted that the heatwave is part of a broader trend affecting the Kashmir Valley.
Impact on Daily Life and Health Advisory
The intense heat has disrupted normal life in Srinagar. Residents are staying indoors during peak afternoon hours, and the demand for electricity has surged as fans and air conditioners run continuously. Health authorities have issued advisories urging people to stay hydrated and avoid direct sun exposure between 12 PM and 4 PM. Hospitals have reported an increase in heat-related illnesses such as dehydration and heatstroke.
Weather Forecast and Relief Expectations
The IMD has predicted that the heatwave may persist for another two days, with temperatures likely to remain above 34°C. However, there is a possibility of light rainfall towards the end of the week, which could bring some relief. Farmers in the region are concerned about the impact on crops, particularly apples and saffron, which are sensitive to extreme heat.
