The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), which administers the iconic Lord Venkateswara Swamy temple at Tirumala, is actively considering the establishment of a third Vaikuntam queue complex to alleviate the hardships faced by pilgrims waiting in outside queues during surges in pilgrim rush.
Annual Pilgrim Footfall and Peak Periods
With over 2.5 crore devotees visiting Tirumala every year, the hill town experiences severe congestion when pilgrim numbers spike abnormally, particularly during select weekends, festive occasions, and summer holidays. Although pilgrim rush during the annual Brahmotsavams and Vaikunta Ekadasi festivities has remained reasonably controlled in recent years, the town sees high devotee turnout on certain weekends and during summer vacations. This stretches the waiting time for darshan beyond 24 hours, with tens of thousands of devotees, often accompanied by families, forced to wait in outdoor queue lines just to enter the existing twin Vaikuntam queue complexes.
Data-Driven Analysis of Pilgrim Patterns
Following the establishment of an integrated command control center at Tirumala last year, TTD Additional Executive Officer (AEO) Ch Venkaiah Chowdary, with support from experts across various fields, has been closely analyzing pilgrim footfall patterns. The aim is to accurately identify the timelines linked to pilgrim footfall spikes within a calendar year, where religious events are fixed and uniform annually. The Tirupati trust has determined that abnormal pilgrim rush occurs at Tirumala on 120 to 150 days each year, depending on numerous factors. It is during these scattered periods that devotees are forced to wait in serpentine queue lines for extended hours even before entering the main darshan lines.
Proposed Third Queue Complex
Having thoroughly studied these footfall patterns, the Tirupati trust is now contemplating the construction of a third Vaikuntam queue complex. This facility is intended to help the temple trust mitigate the perennial woes of devotees visiting the hill town for a darshan of Lord Venkateswara on peak days. AEO Venkaiah Chowdary has held a series of meetings with external experts as well as senior officials from the estates and engineering departments to design concrete proposals for establishing the third queue complex near the Narayanagiri gardens and RB centre area at Tirumala.
Expected Benefits for Pilgrims
According to Venkaiah Chowdary, once the third queue complex becomes operational, pilgrims will no longer have to endure waiting in outdoor queues with their families. “They can instead get inside the proposed Vaikuntam-3 queue complex, which will be equipped with all pilgrim amenities including waiting compartments and halls, toilets, and get into the darshan queue lines once their time arrives,” the additional EO explained. These proposals are likely to be placed before the TTD trust board for approval soon, a decision that could permanently end the culture of serpentine queue lines and inordinate waiting hours at Tirumala.
