The death toll from the devastating landslide in Wayanad district has risen to six, as rescue teams continue search operations in the affected areas. The landslide, triggered by heavy rainfall, struck multiple hamlets in the hilly region, causing widespread destruction.
Search Operations Intensify
Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan, after reviewing the situation on Wednesday, emphasized that search operations will be given the highest priority. “Rescue efforts are underway, and we are deploying all available resources to locate missing persons and provide aid to the affected families,” he said. The state government has mobilized disaster response teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), to assist in the operations.
Impact and Casualties
The landslide, which occurred late Tuesday night, buried several houses under debris. Rescue workers have recovered six bodies so far, and officials fear the toll may rise as search operations progress. Dozens of people are reported missing, and authorities are working to establish communication with isolated villages. Relief camps have been set up to accommodate displaced residents, and medical teams are on standby to treat the injured.
Government Response
The state government has announced compensation for the families of the deceased and promised all possible assistance to those affected. “We are ensuring that rescue and relief operations are carried out without any delay,” Satheesan added. The India Meteorological Department has warned of more heavy rainfall in the region, raising concerns about further landslides.
