A wild elephant was discovered dead in 7th Hosakote village, Madikeri, on Thursday morning. The tusker, believed to be around 25 years old, had been spotted roaming the area in search of food on Wednesday night. Forest officials suspect that the elephant got stuck in mud and died of suffocation.
Incident Details
The death came to light early Thursday when locals noticed the elephant's carcass. Foresters from the region, including Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) Naveen Kumar and Kushalnagar range Range Forest Officer (RFO) Rakshit, visited the spot to assess the situation. They confirmed that the elephant likely became trapped in muddy terrain, leading to its death.
Forest Officials' Response
Upon arrival, the officials conducted a preliminary investigation. They noted that the area had soft mud, which could have caused the elephant to sink and struggle, eventually leading to suffocation. The exact cause of death will be determined after a post-mortem examination.
This incident highlights the challenges faced by wildlife in the region, especially during the monsoon season when muddy conditions become hazardous. Forest department personnel are monitoring the area to prevent similar occurrences.
