The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has initiated the process to construct a 417-metre-long skywalk equipped with travelators at Anand Vihar. This facility aims to provide seamless connectivity between the railway station, the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) at Kaushambi, the Namo Bharat station, the Delhi Metro station, and the existing foot overbridge (FOB).
Addressing Encroachment and Operational Issues
The existing FOB, which connects the Delhi Metro and Namo Bharat stations, is often encroached upon by vendors, and its escalators are frequently non-operational. The new skywalk will be built parallel to the current FOB, offering an alternative and more efficient route. Anand Vihar is one of the busiest transport hubs in Delhi-NCR, handling thousands of commuters daily across various modes of transport.
Project Details and Timeline
NCRTC has floated a tender for the construction of the skywalk. The proposed structure will include travelators, escalators, and lifts to facilitate easier movement for senior citizens, women, people traveling with children, persons with reduced mobility, and passengers carrying luggage. The skywalk is expected to be completed within 15 months after the tender is awarded.
The hub currently features two ISBTs at Anand Vihar and Kaushambi, two Delhi Metro corridors (Pink and Blue lines), the Anand Vihar railway station, and the Anand Vihar Namo Bharat station. Passenger volumes across these services have grown significantly, increasing pressure on existing pedestrian links, particularly during peak hours. The new skywalk is designed as an additional corridor to support this rising demand and improve circulation.
Enhanced Connectivity and Security
This additional, direct, and weather-protected pedestrian corridor is expected to ease congestion at the station precinct, improve connectivity between major transport systems, and support more organized movement in one of the NCR's most congested transit hubs. The project will also facilitate a single-point security check between Namo Bharat and Delhi Metro services, allowing passengers to switch between systems without repeated screening.
Infrastructure and Amenities
According to the tender, the scope of work includes the construction of the entire skywalk with roofing, structural works, foundations, and supporting infrastructure. The project will also incorporate CCTV systems, solar panels, drainage arrangements, and other commuter amenities.
The Anand Vihar Namo Bharat station is connected to Chaudhary Charan Singh Marg by three bridges over the Ghazipur drain. The 10-metre-wide right bridge serves as the vehicular entry point for taxis and private vehicles to drop passengers at the station gate. The 13-metre-wide left bridge provides an exit route for these vehicles back to the main road. The 5-metre-wide middle bridge is dedicated to pedestrian movement within the station premises.
