Ahmedabad: After days of scorching heat that left residents of Ahmedabad wilting, an unexpected spell of unseasonal showers brought a pleasant surprise on Tuesday evening. The day began with cloudy skies and a light breeze, courtesy of an upper cyclonic circulation over southwest Rajasthan, providing much-needed relief from the soaring temperatures.
Evening Thunderstorm Brings Rain
A thunderstorm rolled in later in the day, culminating in light to moderate showers that primarily affected the western parts of the city, including Navrangpura, Naranpura, Ambawadi, Bodakdev, Satellite, Sola, SG Highway, Makarba, and peripheral areas. The weather took a dramatic turn around 9 pm, catching commuters off guard as the sudden downpour created puddles on roads and disrupted traffic movement.
Temperature Records
The day's maximum temperature was recorded at a comparatively low 39 degrees Celsius, which is 2.7 degrees below normal. The minimum temperature stood at 27.9 degrees Celsius, 1.7 degrees above normal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a maximum temperature of 39 degrees Celsius for Wednesday. The IMD also indicated that there will be no significant change in the maximum temperature over the next seven days, though isolated pockets may see temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius.
Rain in Other Parts of Gujarat
Other regions of Gujarat, including Dahod, Mahisagar, Amreli, and Rajkot, also experienced light to moderate rainfall. Fatepura and Jhalod in Dahod recorded 20 mm and 14 mm of rainfall, respectively, until 6 pm on Tuesday. In total, eight talukas received 1 mm or more of rainfall. According to the IMD, the coastal region of Gujarat is likely to experience hot and humid weather from May 9 to 11.
Highest Temperatures Recorded
Rajkot recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state at 42.3 degrees Celsius, followed by Surendranagar and Kandla at 41 degrees Celsius, and Amreli at 40.9 degrees Celsius.
