Tarique Rahman to Contest Bangladesh Polls from 2 Seats After 17-Year Exile
BNP's Tarique Rahman to contest Bangladesh elections from 2 seats

In a significant political development, Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, has formally entered the electoral fray for the upcoming general elections. Rahman will contest from two key constituencies, marking a pivotal moment for the opposition party.

Nomination Papers Signed for Dual Constituencies

Tarique Rahman signed his nomination papers on Sunday, December 27, at the BNP Chairperson's office in the Gulshan area of Dhaka. He will be contesting the 13th national parliamentary election from the Dhaka-17 and Bogra-6 constituencies. The BNP's electoral symbol, the Sheaf of Paddy, will represent him on the ballot.

The signing ceremony was attended by coordinators from both constituencies. According to BNP media cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan, who spoke to the Dhaka Tribune, Abdus Salam, a member of the BNP Chairperson's Advisory Council, has been appointed the chief coordinator for Dhaka-17. Professor Dr. Farhad Halim Donar, also from the Advisory Council, will play a key role in overseeing election activities.

Return from Exile and Voter Registration

This move follows Rahman's highly publicized return to Bangladesh on Thursday, December 25, 2025, ending a period of self-imposed exile that lasted over 17 years. His arrival at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport drew large crowds of supporters.

Shortly after his return, on Saturday, December 27, Rahman took a crucial step by applying for his voting rights at the Bangladesh Election Commission office. His application for induction into the voters' list was accompanied by a procession of enthusiastic BNP workers, significantly boosting party morale.

Election Strategy and Upcoming Polls

The nomination papers for both constituencies are scheduled to be submitted on Monday, as reported by the Dhaka Tribune, citing BNP sources. This strategic decision to field Rahman from two seats was earlier indicated by BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed, who stated it was part of the party's broader electoral plan.

Rahman has also begun active consultations, holding discussions with BNP leaders and activists, including representatives from associate bodies in the Dhaka-17 constituency, to address organizational issues and election strategies.

The 13th parliamentary election in Bangladesh is scheduled to be held on February 12, 2026. Rahman's candidacy comes at a turbulent time for the nation, which is experiencing widespread protests, incidents of violence, and allegations of atrocities against minority communities, drawing international attention.
