Chennai continued to reel under intense summer heat on Wednesday as temperatures crossed 40 degrees Celsius in several parts of the city. According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Nungambakkam recorded a high of 40.7 degrees Celsius, while Meenambakkam airport touched 42 degrees Celsius. The mercury at Meenambakkam was 2.9 degrees above normal, and Nungambakkam was 2.5 degrees above normal for this time of the year.
Hottest Spots in Tamil Nadu
Tiruttani emerged as the hottest place in Tamil Nadu with a maximum temperature of 41.5 degrees Celsius, closely followed by Vellore at 41.6 degrees Celsius. Several other districts also recorded high temperatures, including Madurai airport at 39 degrees Celsius, Tondi at 39 degrees Celsius, Nagapattinam at 38.5 degrees Celsius, Madurai city at 38.4 degrees Celsius, and Cuddalore and Trichy at 38.1 degrees Celsius each.
Hill Stations Offer Respite
In contrast, hill stations provided some relief with relatively cooler temperatures. Ooty recorded a maximum of 25 degrees Celsius, Kodaikanal 25.1 degrees Celsius, and Valparai 28 degrees Celsius.
Persisting Heat Conditions
Weather officials noted that maximum temperatures in many interior and coastal districts remained above normal, indicating that the heatwave conditions are likely to persist across Tamil Nadu. Residents are advised to take precautions against the scorching heat.
