Indian Special Forces (SF) personnel are serving as mentors for elite African troops during urban combat drills at the multinational special forces exercise Flintlock 2026. The exercise, which began in early February, is being held in multiple locations across West Africa, with a focus on enhancing counterterrorism capabilities and interoperability among participating nations.
Role of Indian Special Forces
Indian SF operators are leading training modules on close-quarters battle, room clearing, and hostage rescue scenarios in simulated urban environments. Their expertise, honed through decades of counterinsurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir and other regions, is being shared with soldiers from countries such as Senegal, Ghana, and Niger.
Exercise Objectives
Flintlock 2026, organized by U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), aims to strengthen the capacity of partner nations to address violent extremist organizations. This year's edition includes over 1,500 personnel from 20 countries, with India participating as a key contributor.
Strategic Significance
India's involvement underscores its growing defense ties with Africa. The training not only enhances tactical skills but also fosters diplomatic relations. Indian instructors emphasized the importance of adapting techniques to local conditions, ensuring that African troops can effectively apply lessons learned in their own operational environments.
