External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday asserted that there is no justification for terrorism in any form, as he addressed the BRICS Foreign Ministers' meeting in Cape Town, South Africa. He emphasized the need for a unified global response to counter terrorism and violent extremism, which he described as one of the most serious threats to international peace and security.
Strong Message Against Terrorism
Speaking at the gathering of foreign ministers from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, Jaishankar made it clear that terrorism cannot be justified under any circumstances. He called for concerted efforts to dismantle terrorist networks and their financing, while also urging member states to avoid double standards in dealing with the issue.
Global Cooperation Essential
The minister stressed that terrorism and extremism respect no borders, making international collaboration indispensable. He advocated for the early adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT) at the United Nations, a long-pending initiative that India has been pushing for. Jaishankar also highlighted the importance of addressing the root causes of terrorism, including radicalization and the misuse of technology.
Jaishankar's remarks come against the backdrop of rising global concerns over terrorism, with India consistently raising the issue at multilateral forums. The BRICS platform, he noted, provides a valuable opportunity for like-minded nations to coordinate their efforts and strengthen mechanisms to combat the scourge.
Focus on Multilateralism
In his address, Jaishankar also touched upon the broader challenges facing the global order, including the need for reformed multilateralism. He called for a more inclusive and representative global governance structure that reflects contemporary realities. The minister underscored India's commitment to working with BRICS partners to promote peace, security, and sustainable development.
India's Role in BRICS
India has been an active member of BRICS, using the platform to advance its foreign policy objectives. The meeting in Cape Town is part of a series of engagements leading up to the BRICS summit later this year. Jaishankar's strong stance on terrorism reinforces India's position as a key voice in the fight against global terror.
The minister's statement was widely noted by international media, with many outlets highlighting his unequivocal condemnation of terrorism. The BRICS foreign ministers are expected to issue a joint communique reflecting their shared commitment to combating terrorism and promoting peace.
