Kerala-Style Guruvayurappan Temple Being Built in Vrindavan
Kerala-Style Guruvayurappan Temple Rising in Vrindavan

A temple dedicated to Lord Guruvayurappan is currently being constructed in Vrindavan, the sacred land associated with Lord Krishna's birth and childhood. This ambitious project goes beyond being a mere place of worship; it aims to meticulously transplant Kerala's unique 'tanthric' spiritual ecosystem into the heart of North India, effectively re-establishing Guruvayurappan in Vrindavan.

Architectural Authenticity

The temple's physical design is rooted entirely in classic Kerala architectural style. To ensure complete authenticity, the construction follows Tanthra Samuchayam, the foundational text of Kerala temple worship. The layout and structural alignment are guided by the renowned Kanippayyur family, who are the foremost authorities on Kerala Vaastu Shastra, according to Venmarathoor Sankaran Namboodiripad, the main contractor of the project. The Mohanji Foundation is overseeing the construction.

Ritualistic Traditions

The 'Kerala angle' extends deeply into the temple's ritualistic soul. The Eekkad family, whose members previously served as the hereditary tanthris (high priests) of the original Guruvayur temple, will oversee all consecrations and ceremonies, said project coordinator Rajesh Varma. Additionally, the temple's flag mast has been fully constructed in Pala, Kottayam, and will be transported to Vrindavan for installation.

The day-to-day spiritual management will be led by Eekkad Neelakantan, a traditional Kerala tanthri. His role is to ensure that the rigorous, discipline-heavy Kerala temple management style, known for its emphasis on purity and specific rhythmic rituals, is maintained without dilution in Vrindavan.

Cultural Embassy for Kerala

The temple complex will serve as a cultural embassy for Kerala, featuring a koothambalam, a traditional temple theatre designed specifically for ritual arts, and Parayan halls dedicated to the traditional chanting styles of South India.

Consecration and Completion

The pranaprathishta (consecration) is scheduled for February 19, 2027, which aligns with the anniversary of the original installation at Guruvayur in Thrissur. The project is set for completion in September 2027, promising to provide a sanctuary where the 'feel and ambience' of Kerala's most sacred shrine are perfectly preserved in Vrindavan.
