Kochi: The Union government has given the nod to revive the Angamaly-Aroor bypass project, breathing new life into a critical infrastructure initiative aimed at decongesting Kochi. “A fresh 3(A) notification for land acquisition will be issued shortly,” Benny Behanan, MP said.
Project Details
The bypass was originally planned as a 44.7-km corridor connecting Angamaly with Kundannoor along the NH-66 bypass. However, the previous land acquisition notification lapsed, following delays in completion of land survey. This delay paved way for a major rethink on project’s scope in view of the vehicle volumes far exceeding 2018 projections.
Upgraded Design
The project, originally planned as a six-lane corridor, will now be an eight-lane highway. Furthermore, the alignment is being extended further south. Instead of terminating at the heavily congested Nettoor junction, the bypass will now stretch to Aroor, increasing the total length to approximately 50km. This extension is strategically engineered to link the new bypass directly with the under-construction Aroor-Thuravoor elevated highway, ensuring a seamless transit corridor.
Legal Necessity
Because the previous notification lapsed and the project design has substantially changed, a fresh 3(A) notification is legally mandatory.
