Mumbai is set to witness 24 high tides exceeding 4.5 metres during the upcoming monsoon season, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The advisory, issued on June 4, 2026, urges residents to remain vigilant, especially those living in low-lying areas and near the coastline.
High Tide Predictions
The BMC has identified specific dates and times when the high tides are expected to peak. These events could lead to waterlogging and flooding in vulnerable zones. The highest tide is forecasted to reach up to 4.9 metres in July.
Safety Measures for Residents
Authorities have advised locals to avoid venturing near beaches, promenades, and sea walls during high tide periods. Fishermen are cautioned against going out to sea. The BMC has also deployed emergency response teams and set up control rooms for quick assistance.
Impact on Daily Life
High tides may disrupt road traffic and suburban train services, particularly along the Western and Harbour lines. Commuters are advised to plan their travel accordingly and stay updated through official channels.
The BMC has urged building residents to secure loose objects on balconies and terraces to prevent accidents. Additionally, temporary shelters will be arranged for those in high-risk areas if needed.
This monsoon, Mumbai is expected to receive above-average rainfall, compounding the challenges posed by high tides. The civic body is working with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to monitor the situation round the clock.
