Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released its monsoon forecast for Odisha, predicting that parts of south and central Odisha will likely experience normal or above-normal rainfall this year. This prediction comes amid the possible development of El Nino conditions, which typically suppress monsoon rains in India. However, the northern pockets of Odisha may receive below-normal monsoon rainfall, according to IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.
Heatwave Days to Increase
Mohapatra further forecast that the state could see at least two to three more heatwave days this year compared to usual. This is a significant concern for residents, as heatwaves can lead to health issues and increased demand for water and electricity.
Southwest Monsoon Arrival
Referring to the much-awaited southwest monsoon, Mohapatra said it is expected to reach Kerala within the next four to five days. The monsoon typically progresses northward and covers Odisha by mid-June. The timely arrival is crucial for agriculture, as the state heavily depends on monsoon rains for kharif crops.
The IMD's forecast provides important guidance for farmers and policymakers to plan agricultural activities and water management. While the overall outlook is positive for most regions, the below-normal rainfall in northern Odisha may require contingency measures such as drought-resistant crops or supplementary irrigation.
Residents can also check local updates on gold and silver rates, bank holidays, public holidays, petrol, diesel, CNG, and LPG prices in Bhubaneswar for daily planning.
