PM Modi Congratulates Ethiopian Counterpart on Election Win
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday extended his congratulations to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali for a landslide victory in the country's parliamentary elections. In a post on social media platform X, PM Modi described the win as a "decisive victory" for Abiy Ahmed Ali and the Prosperity Party.
India-Ethiopia Ties Highlighted
"India greatly cherishes its historic, multifaceted and deep-rooted ties with Ethiopia. I fondly recall my visit to Ethiopia last year and look forward to working closely together to further strengthen our Strategic Partnership and the bonds of friendship between our peoples," PM Modi wrote.
The National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) announced on Sunday that the ruling Prosperity Party (PP) won 438 out of 486 contested seats in the House of Peoples' Representatives (HoPR), the lower house of the Ethiopian Parliament, during the June 1 General Election.
Landmark Visit and Investment
PM Modi visited Ethiopia last December, a trip that infused fresh dynamism into bilateral ties. During the visit, he expressed India's readiness to expand cooperation in Digital Public Infrastructure, mining, critical minerals, clean energy, food security, and agriculture. The leaders also reviewed progress in trade, investment, technology, education, and capacity building.
PM Modi noted that Indian enterprises have invested over USD 5 billion in Ethiopia, particularly in manufacturing and pharmaceuticals, generating more than 75,000 local jobs. As a special gesture, he addressed a Joint Session of the Ethiopian Parliament during his inaugural bilateral tour.
