Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson held delegation-level talks in New Delhi on Tuesday to steer bilateral ties into a new phase of cooperation. The discussions focused on enhancing partnerships in trade, investment, innovation, and climate action.
Key Areas of Discussion
The two leaders reviewed the progress of the India-Sweden Joint Action Plan and explored new avenues for collaboration. They emphasized the importance of the India-Sweden Innovation Partnership, which aims to foster joint research and development in areas such as smart cities, clean energy, and digital health.
Trade and Investment
Both sides agreed to deepen economic ties, with a focus on increasing bilateral trade and investment flows. Sweden is one of India's key partners in the European Union, and the talks aimed at removing barriers to trade and promoting business-to-business linkages.
Climate and Sustainability
Climate change was a major theme, with the leaders discussing joint efforts to achieve net-zero emissions. The India-Sweden Green Transition Partnership was highlighted as a model for cooperation in sustainable development, including initiatives in renewable energy and green mobility.
Strategic and Global Issues
The talks also covered regional and global issues of mutual interest, including the situation in Ukraine, the Indo-Pacific region, and multilateral cooperation. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a rules-based international order and the reform of global institutions.
Cultural and People-to-People Ties
Modi and Kristersson noted the growing cultural exchanges and the role of the Indian diaspora in Sweden in strengthening bilateral relations. They encouraged more student exchanges and tourism between the two countries.
The delegation-level talks concluded with the signing of several agreements, including a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the field of forest and wildlife management. The Swedish PM also invited PM Modi to visit Sweden at an early date.
