Prime Minister Narendra Modi has warned that the world faces a series of challenges that could reverse decades of progress and push a large portion of the global population back into poverty if not addressed. Speaking to the Indian diaspora in The Hague, Modi highlighted the compounding crises of the coronavirus pandemic, ongoing wars, and the current energy crisis, describing the current decade as a 'decade of disasters.'
Decade of Disasters
Addressing the gathering, Modi stated, 'We are witnessing how the world is struggling with new challenges one after the other. First was the coronavirus pandemic, then wars began to erupt and now the world is facing an energy crisis. This decade is increasingly turning into a decade of disasters for the world. We can all see that if these conditions are not changed swiftly, a very large section of the world's population could once again be pushed into the quagmire of poverty.'
India's Unprecedented Transformation
Despite the global outlook, Modi's speech largely focused on India's numerous achievements since he assumed office 12 years ago. He lauded the country's 'unprecedented' transformation and urged the diaspora to reconnect with India and participate in its journey toward becoming a developed nation. 'From that day to this day, the trust reposed in me by crores of Indians neither allows me to stop nor to tire,' he said.
Opportunities and Aspirations
Modi highlighted India's boundless aspirations, including its aim to host the Olympics and become a global manufacturing hub. He described India as a land of opportunities that is both technology-driven and humanity-driven, blending modernity with ancient traditions. 'India is becoming as modern as it is ancient,' he remarked.
Call to the Diaspora
Urging the Indian community abroad to join India's development journey, Modi emphasized that their participation would strengthen India's capabilities and yield greater returns on their investments. 'This will strengthen India's capabilities, and it will also bring greater returns on your investments. This is Modi's guarantee,' he said, drawing applause from the audience.
The prime minister also touched upon the high voter turnout in recent Indian elections, reflecting the country's democratic vigor and aspirations. He reiterated his commitment to transforming India into a developed nation, inviting the diaspora to be partners in this endeavor.
