A tragic incident occurred at Triveni Ghat in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, where a 15-year-old boy was swept away by the strong currents of the Ganga river. The incident took place on Tuesday evening when the teenager, identified as Rohan, a resident of Haridwar, had come to visit the ghat with his family. According to eyewitnesses, Rohan's spectacles accidentally fell into the river while he was standing near the water's edge. In a bid to retrieve them, he jumped into the river but was immediately caught in the swift current.
Rescue Efforts Underway
Upon hearing the commotion, local villagers and other devotees present at the ghat raised an alarm. The police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams were promptly informed. A rescue operation was launched, with divers searching the river for the missing boy. However, due to the strong currents and increasing water levels, the search has been challenging. As of Wednesday morning, there was no trace of the teenager.
Family in Distress
The boy's family, who had come from Haridwar for a pilgrimage, is in a state of shock. They have been camping at the ghat, hoping for a miracle. Local authorities have assured them that all possible efforts are being made to locate the boy. The incident has once again highlighted the dangers of venturing into the river, especially at points where the current is strong.
Triveni Ghat is a popular spot for tourists and pilgrims, known for its confluence of three rivers and the daily Ganga aarti. Authorities have urged visitors to exercise caution and avoid entering the water without proper safety measures. This tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictable nature of the river, especially during the monsoon season when water levels and currents are particularly treacherous.
