US Orders Anthropic to Block Foreign Access to AI Models Over Security
US Orders Anthropic to Halt Foreign Access to AI Models

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has announced that it was ordered by the U.S. government to suspend access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models for all foreign nationals, citing national security concerns. The company received the export control directive on Friday but was not provided specific details about the security issues behind the decision.

Government Cites Jailbreak Concerns

According to Anthropic, the government believes it has identified a method of bypassing, or “jailbreaking,” the Fable 5 model. The company stated: “The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance. Access to all other Anthropic models will not be affected.”

Anthropic also expressed that there may have been a “misunderstanding” and is working to restore access to the models as soon as possible.

Broader Export Controls

In a related report, Axios noted that the Trump administration is now blocking access to these advanced AI models for foreign governments, companies, and individuals. It cited a letter from U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, stating that the models would fall under export controls outside the United States and for all foreign persons within the country. The action followed claims that another company had managed to jailbreak the Mythos model.

Earlier this month, President Donald Trump signed an executive order requiring major AI companies to submit their advanced models for government cybersecurity testing before public release. Separately, the U.S. Defense Department had previously described Anthropic as a “supply-chain risk.”
