Amreli Freezes at 6°C, Tops Gujarat's Cold Chart This Winter

Amreli shivered through a freezing night as winter unleashed its icy grip. The Saurashtra town recorded a minimum temperature of 6°C. This made it the coldest place in Gujarat for the first time this winter season.

Sharp Drop Below Normal Levels

The India Meteorological Department data revealed a startling fact. Amreli's temperature was a sharp 5.4 degrees below the normal level. It even surpassed Naliya, which typically holds the title of Gujarat's coldest spot. Naliya logged a minimum of 9.6°C on the same night.

Keshod in Junagadh district became the second coldest location. It recorded 7.4°C. Kandla followed closely with 7.9°C.

Rajkot and Coastal Towns Feel the Chill

Saurashtra's commercial capital, Rajkot, experienced its coldest day so far. The mercury dipped to 8.4°C, which is 4.4°C below normal. Surprisingly, the coastal town of Porbandar also felt the intense cold. Its temperature plunged to a season's lowest of 8.9°C, about 5.1°C below normal. This indicates that winter has firmly gripped even the usually warmer seaside towns.

Statewide Temperature Plunge

Naliya's temperature of 9.6°C marked a sharp rise from last week's freezing 3.8°C. Deesa in Banaskantha district recorded a marginally lower 9.3°C than Naliya. Several other places witnessed their season's lowest temperatures.

  • Vadodara saw 10°C, a departure of minus 3.1°C from normal.
  • Bhavnagar recorded 10.6°C, which is 3.3°C below normal.

IMD Explains the Cold Spell

The India Meteorological Department attributed the sharp fall in night temperatures to specific weather conditions. Cold northerly winds swept across the region. Clear skies allowed rapid heat loss after sunset. These factors combined to create the intense cold wave affecting Gujarat.
