Andhra Pradesh Weather: Four Fatalities in Lightning Strikes Amidst Contrasting Conditions
On Monday, Andhra Pradesh presented a stark contrast in weather patterns, with coastal regions experiencing thunderstorms and relief from heat, while Rayalaseema battled persistent hot and humid conditions. This meteorological split resulted in tragic consequences, as four individuals lost their lives in separate lightning strike incidents across the state.
Thunderstorms Bring Relief and Tragedy to Coastal Districts
Sudden thunderstorms swept through multiple coastal districts, including Srikakulam, Alluri Sitharama Raju, Parvathipuram Manyam, Anakapalle, Vizianagaram, Prakasam, Markapuram, NTR, Krishna, West Godavari, East Godavari, Dr B R Ambedkar Konaseema, and Kakinada. These storms provided much-needed respite from the soaring temperatures that had plagued the region in recent days.
However, the storms also brought deadly lightning. In Markapuram district, Nagayya was killed by a strike at Yerragondapalem. At Pullalacheruvu, Kannaiah died and four others were injured in another lightning incident. Additional fatalities included sixty-year-old V Narasamma in Vizianagaram district and forty-year-old Simhachalam in Parvathipuram Manyam district.
These incidents follow a previous tragedy on Sunday, where a mother and daughter, M Krishna Kumari (40) and Yogeswari (15), were struck by lightning while collecting cashew fruits and nuts at B Kesupuram village in Srikakulam district's Mandasa mandal.
Rayalaseema Endures Scorching Heat Wave
In stark contrast, the Rayalaseema region experienced no such relief. Maximum temperatures ranged between 36°C and 40°C, creating uncomfortable hot and humid conditions. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Nandyal recorded the state's highest temperature at 40.7°C, followed by Kadapa at 40.3°C and Anantapur at 39.5°C.
Even in coastal Andhra Pradesh, some areas remained hot, with Jangamaheswarapuram in Palnadu district reaching 38.5°C and Nandigama at 38.1°C.
IMD Forecast and Agricultural Impact
The IMD has issued a forecast predicting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning at isolated places over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema from April 7 to 9. Gusty winds with speeds of 40–50 kmph are also likely in isolated areas during this period.
Weather officials anticipate a dramatic mix of conditions over the next two to three days, with thunderstorms, rain, and lightning in some districts, while others continue to experience hot and humid weather.
The recent storms have already caused significant agricultural damage. Rain accompanied by gusty winds harmed standing horticulture crops, including mango, banana, and papaya, in parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh.
Resident Observations and Seasonal Context
Describing the first April thundershowers in parts of the Visakhapatnam region this year, resident V Ganesh noted that cloud cover transformed the summer skyline into a typical rainy-day scene, with many areas witnessing overcast skies.
This weather event highlights the volatile nature of Andhra Pradesh's climate during this transitional period, where relief and risk coexist in close proximity.
