Delhi Shivers at 2.9°C: IMD Reports Intense Cold Wave, AQI Worsens
Delhi Cold Wave: Temp Dips to 2.9°C, AQI Poor

New Delhi is grappling with a severe and intense cold spell, with temperatures plummeting across the national capital. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Ayanagar recorded the season's lowest minimum temperature at a biting 2.9 degrees Celsius.

Record Low Temperatures Grip the Capital

Several areas of the city experienced cold wave conditions on Sunday night, with minimum temperatures hovering alarmingly close to the three-degree mark. The Palam observatory registered a low of 3°C, marking its coldest reading in several years. IMD officials have indicated that these harsh conditions are likely to persist throughout the day.

At the Safdarjung weather station, the minimum temperature was 4.8°C on Sunday night. Forecasts predict a further drop to around 3°C on Monday night. The Ridge station recorded a minimum of 3.7°C, while the daytime maximum there reached 18.8°C.

Air Quality and Visibility Concerns Add to Woes

Adding to the public's discomfort is the deteriorating air quality. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi's overall Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 293 (in the 'poor' category) as of 7 am on Monday. This reading shows a marginal increase from Saturday's AQI of 291.

Early morning hours on Monday also saw a thin layer of fog in areas like Dhaula Kuan and Sarai Kale Khan, leading to reduced visibility in pockets of the city. This combination of cold, haze, and poor air quality has significantly increased residents' discomfort.

Persistent Chill and Ongoing Activities

The cold wave has been relentless over the past several days. The capital woke up to a windy and chilly Sunday morning, with early-hour temperatures around 6.6°C. Hazy conditions further reduced visibility across many areas.

On Saturday, the minimum temperature had dipped to 5.4°C, with some parts of the city reporting light rain. Friday also saw cold conditions, with minimum temperatures staying around 5°C.

Despite the challenging weather, essential activities continue. Rehearsals for the upcoming 77th Republic Day parade are proceeding on Kartavya Path, with participants braving the harsh winter conditions.
