Delhi and the National Capital Region experienced an intense cold wave on November 16, 2025, with temperatures dropping to a chilling 9 degrees Celsius, marking the coldest November morning the city has witnessed in three years.
Record-Breaking Cold Grips Capital
The India Meteorological Department confirmed that Monday morning's temperature of 9 degrees Celsius represents the lowest November reading since November 29, 2022, when Delhi recorded 7.3 degrees Celsius. What makes this cold spell particularly notable is its early arrival compared to previous years.
This year's cold wave has arrived significantly earlier than expected. In 2024, the coldest day of November occurred on November 29, whereas the current temperature drop has happened much sooner, indicating a sharper than anticipated onset of winter conditions.
IMD's Five-Day Weather Forecast
The weather agency has issued a detailed forecast for the coming days, predicting continued below-normal temperatures. According to their press release dated November 16, minimum temperatures will remain between -1.6 to -5.0 degrees Celsius below normal over the next five days.
The IMD expects mainly clear skies with shallow fog at most locations and moderate fog at isolated places during morning hours on November 17. The forecast indicates partly cloudy conditions on November 18 and 19, with shallow to moderate fog persisting during morning hours from November 18 through November 22.
What to Expect in Coming Days
Residents should prepare for sustained cold conditions with maximum temperatures around 27 degrees Celsius and minimum temperatures dipping to approximately 8 degrees Celsius during this period. The temperature recorded on November 16 was nearly 4.5 notches below the seasonal normal, highlighting the severity of this early cold spell.
The meteorological department has classified the upcoming temperature conditions as "below normal to appreciably below normal," suggesting that Delhiites will need to brace themselves for an extended period of chilly weather as winter sets in earlier than usual this year.
