Elephant Alert in Ramgarh: Herd Approaches Highway, Safety Warnings Issued

Elephant Alert Issued in Ramgarh as Herd of Seven Jumbos Approaches National Highway-33

The forest and environment department in Ramgarh has raised a high-level elephant alert on Thursday evening following sightings of a herd of seven elephants moving towards National Highway-33. This critical area falls within the suburban zones near Ramgarh town, prompting immediate safety measures from local authorities.

Herd Movement and Safety Precautions

This specific herd is part of a larger group of 18 elephants that have been roaming the forests of the Chutupalu valley. In response to the potential threat, the administration has urgently advised residents in villages such as Kankebar and Bhuda Khukhara to remain indoors and seek shelter in concrete structures. Officials have expressed concerns that the elephants might not only enter the highway but also encroach upon nearby residential areas, posing significant risks to public safety.

Official Statements and Monitoring Efforts

Nitish Kumar, the Ramgarh divisional forest officer (DFO), provided an update on Friday, confirming that the alert was activated after the herd was observed moving dangerously close to villages in the suburban regions of Ramgarh town. He noted that the elephants could potentially shift their path towards the Chutupalu valley as well.

"We have instructed people in Kankebar and other villages adjacent to the Chutupalu valley to stay inside their homes after sunset and take refuge in concrete houses," Kumar stated. He further emphasized that a dedicated quick response team is vigilantly monitoring the movement of the jumbos to ensure timely interventions if needed.

Community Response and Historical Context

Local resident Sewapado Mahto reported that villagers in his area have already implemented precautionary measures, avoiding outdoor activities during nighttime to minimize encounters with the elephants. This cautious approach is informed by a tragic incident in December 2025, when a herd of violent elephants killed six individuals, including a security guard from Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), over a span of three days in Ramgarh district.

In response to that earlier crisis, CCL took unprecedented steps by halting coal production at night in the Karna project of the Mandu block for several days to safeguard coal workers. This historical event underscores the serious nature of elephant-human conflicts in the region and highlights the importance of proactive measures like the current alert.

The ongoing situation remains under close surveillance, with authorities urging continued vigilance from the public to prevent any untoward incidents.
