Elephant Calf Found Dead in Odisha's Rengali Reservoir
In a distressing incident, an elephant calf was found dead, floating in the Rengali reservoir near Kulsara village. The location falls under the Thianal section of the Barkote forest range in Deogarh district, Odisha, on Wednesday.
Details of the Discovery
Forest officials estimated the calf to be less than a year old. The carcass was spotted approximately 1.5 kilometers inside the reservoir, indicating a remote and challenging area for access.
Suspected Cause of Death
According to initial reports, a herd of around 10 elephants, including four calves, had been observed near the waterbody. It is suspected that one of the calves slipped into the upstream portion of the reservoir and drowned, leading to this tragic outcome.
Response from Forest Authorities
After receiving information from the Barkote Range Officer around 8:30 am, a team from the Deogarh forest division swiftly responded. The team included Deogarh DFO Rashmi G, ACF (Administration), ACF (Enforcement), the Range Officer, and field staff who reached the spot promptly.
The carcass was retrieved from the reservoir, and a postmortem was conducted on-site. Following the examination, the remains were buried to prevent any environmental hazards or further distress to wildlife.
Official Statement
Rashmi G, DFO of the Deogarh forest division, stated, "Preliminary findings suggest the calf died due to drowning. The exact cause will be known after the postmortem report is finalized." This indicates that while drowning is the primary suspicion, authorities are awaiting detailed analysis to confirm the circumstances.
Context and Implications
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by wildlife, particularly elephants, in regions where human activities and natural habitats intersect. The Rengali reservoir area is known for its biodiversity, and such events underscore the need for enhanced monitoring and conservation efforts to protect vulnerable species.
Forest officials are likely to review safety measures around waterbodies to prevent similar occurrences in the future, ensuring the well-being of elephant herds and other wildlife in the region.
