Environmental Groups Demand Immediate Stop to Blasting in Kharghar
The NatConnect Foundation and the Save Kharghar Ecology Forum have jointly appealed to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to order an immediate halt to hill blasting and excavation activities in Kharghar, a suburb of Navi Mumbai. The groups argue that the ongoing operations are causing severe environmental degradation and pose a threat to the region's ecological balance.
Concerns Over Ecological Damage
In a letter submitted to the Chief Minister's office, the organizations highlighted that the blasting has led to loss of biodiversity, soil erosion, and increased air and noise pollution. They noted that the hills in Kharghar are part of a fragile ecosystem that supports local flora and fauna. According to a statement from the Save Kharghar Ecology Forum, the blasting has already destroyed several acres of green cover, with more areas at risk if operations continue.
"We urge the government to stop the blasting immediately to prevent further irreversible damage," said a representative of the NatConnect Foundation. "The hills are a natural heritage and must be preserved for future generations."
Legal and Policy Framework
The groups also pointed out that the blasting may violate existing environmental laws, including the Environment Protection Act and the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act. They called for a comprehensive environmental impact assessment before any further activity is permitted. The Chief Minister's office has acknowledged receipt of the letter but has not yet issued a response.
Kharghar has witnessed rapid urbanization in recent years, with real estate development putting pressure on natural landscapes. The environmentalists argue that sustainable development practices must be adopted to balance growth with conservation.
Community Support and Next Steps
Local residents have also voiced support for the halt, citing health concerns from dust and noise. The forums plan to hold a public meeting next week to raise awareness and gather signatures for a petition. They have also reached out to the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board to intervene.
