IMD Predicts Return of Foggy Conditions to Chennai and Neighboring Districts
Morning walkers and early commuters in Chennai should prepare for reduced visibility once again as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast the return of foggy conditions to the city and its neighboring districts starting next week.
Detailed Weather Forecast for the Coming Days
According to the latest IMD bulletin, shallow to moderate fog is likely to develop during the early morning hours over Chennai, Chengalpet, and Tiruvallur from February 15 to 18. This period of reduced visibility is expected to be temporary, giving way to warmer days with partly cloudy skies as the week progresses.
On Saturday, the city and its suburbs may experience mist or haze during the early morning hours. The weather is predicted to remain generally dry, with maximum temperatures around 32°C and minimum temperatures around 22°C.
Scientific Explanation of Fog and Mist Formation
Meteorologists explain that fog typically forms when warm air interacts with a colder surface after nighttime temperatures drop. This interaction leads to the condensation of moisture into tiny water droplets suspended near the ground. Mist develops through a similar atmospheric process but is generally thinner, with visibility remaining above 1 kilometer. In contrast, fog significantly reduces visibility to less than 1 kilometer, creating challenging conditions for transportation and outdoor activities.
Temperature Trends Across the Region
The IMD's extended forecast indicates that until February 17, maximum temperatures are likely to remain near normal levels across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. However, minimum temperatures may rise by approximately two degrees in isolated pockets between February 15 and 17, potentially affecting the intensity and duration of morning fog formation.
Residents are advised to exercise caution during early morning hours when visibility may be compromised, particularly for those engaging in outdoor activities or commuting. The return of foggy conditions follows previous instances where reduced visibility has impacted daily routines and transportation schedules in the metropolitan area.
Weather monitoring continues as meteorological conditions evolve throughout the week, with the IMD providing regular updates to help citizens plan their activities accordingly and stay informed about changing atmospheric patterns in the region.
