Inauguration of a Major Infrastructure Project
Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar inaugurated a 10.7 km long signal-free and toll-free road in Bengaluru on June 27, 2026. The 10-lane stretch, named after former Chief Minister S M Krishna, connects Kadabagere Cross to Challaghatta Metro Station. This project aims to ease traffic congestion in the western part of the city and provide a seamless travel experience for commuters.
Key Features and Benefits
The road is designed to be signal-free, allowing vehicles to travel without stopping at traffic lights, thereby reducing travel time. It is also toll-free, ensuring no additional cost for users. The 10-lane width accommodates high traffic volume, including multiple entry and exit points for better connectivity. According to officials, the road is expected to benefit over 1 lakh commuters daily, particularly those traveling between Kadabagere and Challaghatta.
Naming and Tribute to S M Krishna
The road has been named after S M Krishna, a former Chief Minister of Karnataka, in recognition of his contributions to the state's development. CM Shivakumar stated, "This road is a tribute to S M Krishna's vision for Bengaluru's infrastructure. It will significantly reduce travel time and improve the quality of life for residents."
Impact on Traffic and Connectivity
The new road is expected to decongest major arterial routes in the area, including Magadi Road and Mysore Road. It provides direct access to the Challaghatta Metro Station, integrating road and metro networks for multimodal transport. Local residents and commuters have welcomed the project, citing reduced travel time from 45 minutes to 15 minutes during peak hours. The project was completed at a cost of ₹450 crore, funded entirely by the state government.
Future Plans and Maintenance
The state government plans to maintain the road with smart traffic management systems and regular upkeep. CM Shivakumar also announced plans for similar signal-free corridors in other parts of Bengaluru to address growing urban mobility challenges. The road is part of a larger initiative to improve Bengaluru's infrastructure ahead of the 2030 Commonwealth Games bid.
