Gorai Beach Faces Severe Sand Erosion Due to Controversial Jetty Construction
Mumbai's iconic Gorai beach is experiencing alarming sand erosion, a direct consequence of a newly constructed jetty that local residents and environmental activists claim violates multiple coastal protection guidelines. The structure, built approximately 400 meters from its originally approved site near the old jetty, is reportedly obstructing natural sea currents, leading to significant depletion of coastal sand.
Violation of Coastal Zone Management Authority Directives
According to activists, the jetty was constructed without the promised stilts, a critical design element mandated by the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA). The original plan, as documented in MCZMA minutes, specified that the jetty should be built on stilts to prevent interference with tidal currents and should be located adjacent to the existing old jetty.
"This new unwanted jetty at Gorai is stripping away its sand," stated environmentalist D Stalin of Vanashakti, who also serves on the Bombay High Court-appointed wetlands protection panel. "This natural heritage beach will be fully destroyed if the jetty is not removed."
Immediate Demands and Legal Threats
Local communities and green activists have issued a stern demand for the immediate demolition of the jetty to salvage the beach. Stalin has formally lodged complaints with various state authorities, citing observational evidence and feedback from residents. He warned, "We may be forced to move court if no action is taken on our complaint."
The environmental impact includes:
- Exposure of rocky surfaces previously covered by sand
- Accumulation of silt, potentially leading to a thick layer of muck
- Disruption of the beach's natural ecosystem
Documentation and Government Inaction
Activists are compiling old satellite images of the Gorai coastline to contrast with the current situation, providing visual proof of the degradation. Despite these efforts, government officials from the environment department and MCZMA have yet to respond to the formal complaints, leaving the beach vulnerable to further damage.
Stalin emphasized that the jetty was constructed by reclaiming part of the coastline, a move that directly contradicts coastal conservation principles. "Since there are multiple violations while building this new jetty, the beach is suffering damages with each passing day," he added.
The ongoing situation at Gorai beach highlights broader concerns about coastal management in Mumbai, where development projects often clash with environmental preservation efforts. The community's call to action underscores the urgent need for regulatory enforcement to protect India's natural coastal heritage.
