Gujarat Experiences Unusually Warm Nights as Temperatures Soar Above Seasonal Norms
Residents across Gujarat are experiencing uncharacteristically warm nights, with cities and towns recording temperatures significantly higher than normal for this time of year. According to the latest data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the departure from normal minimum temperatures has been particularly striking, suggesting winter's weakening grip across the state.
Record Minimum Temperatures Across South Gujarat
The IMD data for the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 AM on Thursday revealed dramatic temperature anomalies. Surat emerged as the hottest location in terms of minimum temperature, logging 22.8°C – a staggering 6.9°C above normal and the highest departure recorded in the state.
Several other cities recorded minimum temperatures close to or above 20°C, including:
- Bhavnagar: 20.2°C (+4.9°C above normal)
- Veraval: 20.5°C (+4.4°C above normal)
- Vadodara: 19.4°C (+5.2°C above normal)
- Diu: 18.7°C (+6.1°C above normal)
- Ahmedabad: 18.6°C (+5.4°C above normal)
- Rajkot: 18.5°C (+4.5°C above normal)
- Gandhinagar: 17.8°C (+4.5°C above normal)
Even Naliya, which typically records the coldest nights in the region, reported a minimum temperature of 13.8°C, still 2.5°C above normal. Deesa recorded 15.2°C (+4.2°C) and Bhuj 16.8°C (+4.0°C), further illustrating the widespread nature of this warming trend.
Maximum Temperatures Also Climb Significantly
The warming trend extended to daytime temperatures as well, with maximum temperatures climbing beyond the 30°C mark at numerous locations across Gujarat. Surat again led the state with a maximum temperature of 35.5°C, representing a 4.7°C departure from normal.
Other notable maximum temperature recordings included:
- Rajkot: 34.3°C (+4.2°C above normal)
- Daman: 32.8°C
- Bhuj: 32.4°C (+2.9°C above normal)
- Porbandar: 32.4°C (+2.4°C above normal)
- Amreli: 32.3°C (+1.5°C above normal)
- Naliya: 32.0°C (+2.8°C above normal)
- Baroda: 31.8°C (+0.8°C above normal)
- Deesa: 31.4°C (+2.5°C above normal)
- Diu: 31.0°C (+1.8°C above normal)
Dwarka recorded 30.5°C (+3.6°C above normal), while both Ahmedabad and Veraval registered 30.2°C each. Gandhinagar recorded 29.8°C, and Bhavnagar stayed slightly cooler at 29.4°C, though still above seasonal expectations.
Climate Implications and Regional Impact
The consistent pattern of elevated temperatures across both minimum and maximum readings points to a significant meteorological event affecting Gujarat. The data clearly indicates that winter's grip is weakening earlier than expected, with temperatures across the state showing remarkable consistency in their departure from normal ranges.
This warming trend has implications for agriculture, energy consumption, and public health across the region. The IMD's comprehensive data collection from multiple monitoring stations provides a detailed picture of how this phenomenon is affecting urban and rural areas alike, from the coastal regions to inland cities.
The sustained elevation in temperatures, particularly during nighttime hours, represents a notable departure from typical seasonal patterns and warrants continued monitoring by meteorological authorities and local governments.
