Gujarat Shivers as Cold Winds from North India Plunge Temperatures Below Normal
Gujarat Temperatures Drop as Cold Winds Sweep from North India

Cold winds sweeping in from the freezing northern regions of India have significantly dragged down both maximum and minimum temperatures across Gujarat, with Naliya emerging as the coldest location at a chilling 7°C. According to the latest bulletin from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the mercury in Naliya dropped a notable 3.4 degrees below the normal seasonal average, highlighting the severity of the cold spell.

Rajkot City Experiences Sharp Temperature Dip

Rajkot city has also witnessed a substantial decline in temperatures, affecting both day and night conditions. The maximum temperature settled at 28.5°C, which was 4.8°C below the normal level, while the minimum fell to 10.7°C, marking a 2.3°C drop below the seasonal average. This significant dip underscores the widespread impact of the cold wave across the region.

Western Disturbance Drives Chilly Conditions

The IMD attributed this weather pattern to a Western Disturbance, characterized by a cyclonic circulation centred over Jammu. This system is funnelling chilly winds into Gujarat from north India, which is currently reeling under piercing cold conditions exacerbated by extremely heavy snowfall. The interplay of these atmospheric factors has intensified the cold across the state.

Temperature Trends and Predictions

Looking ahead, the weather department has forecasted a gradual rise in night temperatures by 3-5°C over the next three days, followed by a subsequent gradual fall of 2-3°C that is very likely over the region. This prediction indicates fluctuating conditions, with temporary relief before another dip, keeping residents on alert for changing weather.

Statewide Temperature Variations

Across other parts of Gujarat, daytime temperatures largely remained below normal, with notable readings including:

  • Amreli recording a maximum of 26.3°C, which is 3.9°C below normal.
  • Bhuj at 25.4°C, marking a 2.8°C drop below the average.

Minimum temperatures also stayed low in several locations, such as:

  • Porbandar at 11.4°C, 2.9°C below normal.
  • Dwarka at 14.3°C, 2.3°C below normal.

In the state capital, Gandhinagar recorded 12.5°C on Tuesday night, while Ahmedabad logged 13.6°C, reflecting the pervasive cold conditions even in urban centres.
