In a devastating turn of events, intense hailstorms accompanied by powerful gusty winds struck the districts of Sitamarhi and Sheohar in Bihar on Saturday, leaving a trail of destruction across agricultural lands. The untimely weather phenomenon has inflicted extensive damage on standing crops, vegetable fields, and valuable fruit orchards, including mango and litchi plantations, plunging local farmers into distress.
Wheat and Maize Crops Worst Affected as Harvest Nears
Farmers reported that wheat and maize crops bore the brunt of the severe weather conditions, suffering the most significant losses. This calamity comes at a particularly critical time, with wheat harvesting scheduled to begin in just about two weeks. The premature destruction has raised serious concerns about food security and economic stability for the agrarian communities in the region.
Gusty winds exceeding 50 kilometers per hour swept through Sheohar and the western parts of Sitamarhi district, disrupting normal life and daily activities. The powerful winds not only damaged crops but also led to partial power supply interruptions in several areas, adding to the woes of residents. Additionally, a number of trees were uprooted due to the forceful gusts, posing further risks to infrastructure and safety.
Agricultural Officials Mobilize to Assess Damage
In response to the crisis, Sitamarhi District Agriculture Officer Shantanu Kumar has directed block-level officials to conduct thorough assessments of the damage. These officials are tasked with preparing detailed reports on crop losses, which will be crucial for facilitating appropriate remedial actions and potential compensation for affected farmers.
