IMD Issues Heavy Rainfall Warning for North Kerala Districts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a significant heavy rainfall warning for several districts in north Kerala, effective Tuesday. This alert comes as the region braces for potentially severe weather conditions, with authorities urging residents to take necessary precautions.
Yellow Alert for Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod
Specifically, the IMD has placed Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts under a yellow alert for Tuesday. This alert indicates the likelihood of heavy rainfall and associated hazards, prompting heightened vigilance in these areas.
Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds Expected
According to the IMD forecast, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds with speeds reaching 40-50 kmph are very likely at one or two places over Kerala on Tuesday. These conditions could lead to localized disruptions and pose risks to outdoor activities and infrastructure.
Recent Rainfall Data Highlights Kozhikode as Most Affected
In the 24-hour period recorded on Monday morning, Kozhikode received the highest rainfall of 8 cm, underscoring its vulnerability to heavy precipitation. Other areas reported moderate rainfall, with Munnar and Kunnamangalam receiving 4 cm, while Ambalavayal and Venkurinji recorded 3 cm of rain.
Meteorological Systems Influencing Weather Patterns
The IMD noted that a wind discontinuity, previously extending from north Odisha to south Tamil Nadu, now runs from west Vidarbha to south Tamil Nadu. Additionally, a trough in easterlies spans from the Kanyakumari area to north interior Karnataka, crossing Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and south interior Karnataka. The upper air cyclonic circulation over south interior Karnataka has become less marked, contributing to the evolving weather scenario.
Temperature Variations Across Kerala
In the last 24 hours, temperature fluctuations were observed across various districts. The maximum temperature rose appreciably in Kannur and Thrissur, while it remained above normal in Thiruvananthapuram. Conversely, the minimum temperature fell in Kozhikode and Malappuram but rose in Kottayam.
Record Temperatures Noted
- Palakkad recorded the highest maximum temperature of 38.8°C.
- Punalur recorded the lowest minimum temperature of 21.5°C.
These temperature extremes highlight the diverse climatic conditions within Kerala, influenced by the ongoing meteorological systems. Residents are advised to stay updated with official weather bulletins and take appropriate measures to ensure safety during the anticipated heavy rainfall and stormy conditions.
