India to Host First Global Big Cat Summit in 2026-27, Announces Sitharaman in Budget
India to Host First Global Big Cat Summit in Budget Announcement

In a significant move for global wildlife conservation, India will host the first-ever Global Big Cat Summit this year, as announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during her presentation of the Union Budget 2026-27 in the Lok Sabha. The summit is set to convene heads of governments and ministers from 95 countries to deliberate on collective strategies for the protection of big cats worldwide.

A Major Step Towards International Cooperation

Describing the summit as a pivotal initiative to strengthen international collaboration, Sitharaman emphasized that it will focus on coordinated action to safeguard big cats across their natural habitats. "This year, India is hosting the first-ever Global Big Cat Summit, where leaders and ministers from 95 range countries will deliberate on collective strategies for conservation," she stated in her Budget speech. The event is expected to pave the way for deeper global partnerships, expanded habitat protection efforts, and a renewed emphasis on sustainable wildlife tourism, with potential long-term implications for the survival of big cats in the wild.

India's Leadership in Big Cat Conservation

India, home to the world's largest population of wild tigers, has consistently played a leading role in big cat conservation. The country has been proactive in implementing schemes such as Project Tiger and the recent reintroduction of cheetahs. This budget announcement aligns with India's conservation agenda at a critical time when habitat destruction, climate change, and human-wildlife conflict pose severe threats to the existence of these majestic animals.

The initiative builds on India's growing influence in global wildlife conservation. Sitharaman highlighted the International Big Cat Alliance, established last year, which aims to foster cooperation among countries that are home to species like tigers, lions, leopards, snow leopards, cheetahs, and jaguars. The proposed summit is anticipated to provide a platform for aligning conservation policies, sharing best practices, and mobilizing international resources to support these efforts.

Tourism and Conservation Initiatives in the Budget

Beyond wildlife diplomacy, the Union Budget outlined several tourism and conservation-linked initiatives. The government announced plans to develop ecologically sustainable mountain trails in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, as well as in the Araku Valley of the Eastern Ghats and parts of the Western Ghats. Additionally, key turtle nesting sites in Odisha, Karnataka, and Kerala will be developed into conservation-linked eco-tourism trails.

Enhancing Heritage and Spiritual Tourism

The budget further emphasized the creation of thematic tourism circuits, including bird-watching trails at Pulicat Lake in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. It also includes the development of 15 archaeological sites, such as Lothal, Dholavira, Rakhigarhi, Adichanallur, Sarnath, Hastinapur, and Leh Palace, into experiential destinations that integrate heritage conservation with visitor engagement.

To strengthen spiritual tourism, a new Buddhist circuit scheme in the North-East was announced, covering Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. This initiative will focus on preserving monasteries and temples, improving connectivity, and creating pilgrimage interpretation centers and amenities.

Skill Development in Tourism

Skill development in the tourism sector also received attention in the budget. A proposal was made to train approximately 10,000 tour guides across 20 major destinations under a pilot program, in collaboration with the Indian Institutes of Management. This move aims to enhance the quality of tourism services and promote sustainable practices in the industry.

The Global Big Cat Summit and these associated initiatives underscore India's commitment to conservation and sustainable development, positioning the country as a key player in global environmental efforts.
