The Ranchi Meteorological Office on Monday escalated weather warnings for Jharkhand, issuing an orange alert (be prepared) for thunderstorm, hail, and gusty wind conditions across 13 districts from Tuesday to Wednesday. Concurrently, a yellow alert (watch) has been declared for the remaining districts of the state during this period.
Districts Under Orange Alert
The 13 districts specifically named under the orange alert are:
- Koderma
- Hazaribag
- Giridih
- Dhanbad
- Bokaro
- Ramgarh
- Ranchi
- Gumla
- Khunti
- Simdega
- West Singhbhum
- East Singhbhum
- Saraikela-Kharsawan
Extended Alert and Previous Warnings
Further intensifying the forecast, the weather office has extended the orange alert to include hailstorm, thunderstorm, and gusty wind for 17 districts from Wednesday to Thursday. This follows an earlier orange alert issued for hailstorm, thunderstorm, and wind affecting 10 districts from Monday to Tuesday, indicating a persistent pattern of severe weather activity.
Scientific Explanation Behind the Weather
Abhishek Anand, the deputy director of the Ranchi Met office, provided insights into the meteorological causes. “The thunderstorms, hailstorms, and gusty wind will happen due to strong western disturbances,” he stated. “Because of strong western disturbances, low pressure cyclonic circulation develops in the Mediterranean and moves towards the east through Iran, Afghanistan, and India.”
Anand elaborated on the moisture accumulation process: “As the circulation moves across India through Rajasthan, it collects moisture from the Arabian Sea. The system collects moisture from the Bay of Bengal, while moving eastwards towards Jharkhand after reaching Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Hence, the plains receive rain, hailstorms accompanied with thunderstorms, while the hilly areas receive snowfall.” He added that the impact is expected to gradually reduce after Thursday, with temperatures subsequently rising.
Recent Weather Conditions and Temperature Records
In the past 24 hours, light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms has been reported at several locations across the state. The highest rainfall of 27mm was recorded at Garu in Latehar district.
Temperature variations were notable, with Daltonganj recording the highest maximum temperature in the state at 37.2°C, while Latehar registered the lowest minimum temperature at 16°C. The state capital, Ranchi, experienced a temperature of 32.7°C.
Precautionary Measures and Outlook
Residents in the affected districts are advised to stay prepared for sudden weather changes, secure loose objects, and avoid travel during severe conditions. The Met office continues to monitor the situation closely, with updates expected as the weather system evolves. The gradual reduction in impact post-Thursday may bring some relief, but vigilance remains crucial in the interim.
