Severe Weather Conditions Grip Northern India: IMD Issues Multiple Alerts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of weather alerts for several northern states, predicting continued disruptions due to heavy snowfall, rainfall, and thunderstorms. Following two days of intense weather activity, regions across Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan are bracing for further impact on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.

Jammu & Kashmir Faces Major Disruptions with Snowfall and Alerts

In Jammu & Kashmir, the IMD has activated yellow and orange alerts for various districts, anticipating heavy snowfall in key areas such as Kishtwar, Kulgam, Bandipora, Srinagar, Pulwama, and Kupwara. The weather forecast also includes the possibility of thunderstorms and hailstorms in isolated regions, exacerbating the already challenging conditions.

Areas under orange alert encompass Jammu, Anantnag, Udhampur, Samba, Kathua, Kishtwar, Pulwama, Reasi, and Ganderbal, indicating a higher level of risk and preparedness.

The adverse weather has led to significant transportation hurdles. The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) has been closed due to fresh snowfall around the NAVYUG Tunnel, as confirmed by the Traffic Police in J&K. Authorities have suspended all vehicular movement between Jammu and Srinagar, with additional closures on Mughal Road, SSG Road, and Sinthan Road. Travelers are strongly advised to avoid these routes until they are fully restored and deemed safe.

Air travel has also been severely affected, with Srinagar Airport announcing the cancellation of nearly 20 flights for Tuesday due to adverse weather conditions and operational constraints. Passengers are urged to contact their respective airlines for the latest updates and alternative arrangements, as the situation remains fluid.

Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on Alert for Rainfall and Snowfall

The IMD has placed Himachal Pradesh under a yellow alert for January 27, forecasting rainfall or snowfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. Uttarakhand is similarly expected to experience these conditions on both January 27 and 28, with isolated hailstorm activity likely in these states, as well as in West Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Furthermore, cold wave conditions are anticipated in isolated pockets over Himachal Pradesh from January 29 to 31, adding to the weather-related challenges in the region.

Delhi-NCR and Other States Prepare for Rainfall and Thunderstorms

Delhi-NCR is likely to see light rainfall on Tuesday, with the IMD issuing a yellow alert for the area. The weather department predicts a generally cloudy sky with one or two spells of light rain, possibly accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph during the early morning to forenoon hours. Additional light rain with thunderstorms may occur from afternoon to night.

Rainfall is also expected in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, contributing to the widespread weather disturbances across northern India. Residents and travelers in these regions are advised to stay informed through official updates and exercise caution during this period of volatile weather patterns.
